Interview with Jazz Vocalist Sylvia Brooks

Sylvia Brooks is a vivacious jazz singer who captures her audience with her soothing lyrics.  Her love for music radiates from her soul as her angelic melodies are gently placed within the hearts of her fans. Born into a family of musical geniuses, Sylvia is holding strong to her families’ legacy and taking the world by storm with her latest project, The Arrangement.

Come along as I journey through the world of jazz vocalist Sylvia Brooks.

Renisha Marie: Who is Sylvia Brooks?

Sylvia Brooks: It’s my belief that we are all here for a reason. I’ve spent my life being an artist and I’ve always been creative. It’s here, where I feel I have the power to make a difference in the world.

Renisha Marie: What projects are you currently working on?

Sylvia Brooks: My new CD, The Arrangement.

Renisha Marie: What inspired your third CD, The Arrangement?

Sylvia Brooks: I wanted to explore different musical styles. I didn’t want to be confined to one point of view. And I wanted to work with certain musicians, who’s work spoke to me. I wanted to make something I was proud of.

Renisha Marie: Describe your creative process.

Sylvia Brooks: It’s not something that is conscious. It reveals itself to you. When I started thinking about this project, I had conversations with a number of musicians that I respect. I wasn’t sure what type of album I wanted to make. I wanted to make a Brazilian Jazz album, I wanted to do a Big Band Swing album, I wanted to put some modern pop influences into the mix, and I loved Cuban-African rhythms. Then it dawned on me…I didn’t have to do one thing. Why not do it all. And that’s how Arrangement was born.

Renisha Marie: When did you realize music was your passion?

Sylvia Brooks: The day I was born. Probably even before that, because my parents were both very much musicians in their own rights.

Renisha Marie: Your father, Don Ippolito was an iconic pianist/arranger and your mother was a conservatory-trained opera singer; what was it like growing up in a household with musical geniuses?

Sylvia Brooks: Well, it was interesting. They are clearly two totally different art forms. I think over the last few years, classic influences have become more integrated into Jazz. But, when I was growing up, they were very different concepts. I struggle with the good and bad of both. I really felt more of a connection with Jazz. My father raised me listening to Duke Ellington and Dave Brubeck. He traveled with Buddy Rich, and Stan Kenton. Musicians aren’t rich…It was a hard life.

Renisha Marie: What obstacles if any, did you have to overcome along your journey?

Sylvia Brooks: Trusting and knowing that what I understand is enough, and having the courage to believe in myself.

Renisha Marie: What motivates you?

Sylvia Brooks: Truth, passion, and feeling in my soul that this is what I am meant to be doing.

Renisha Marie: What advice if any, do you have for up-and-coming vocalist?

Sylvia Brooks: Stay true to yourself, and never give up. Have courage, and keep fighting. And always remember, it isn’t about the end of the game, it’s about the process, and how that changes you as a human being. If you don’t put yourself on the line, then you don’t have to deal with failure…in other words, don’t play it safe.

Interview with Joy Bauer; America’s Favorite and Most Trusted Nutrition Expert (Video)

Joy Bauer is founder of Joy Bauer Nutrition Centers and is the nutrition expert on the Today Show. Joy is a #1 New York Times bestselling author as well as America’s favorite and most trusted nutrition expert. Follow me as we journey through the world of Joy Bauer.

Renisha Marie: Let’s begin by discussing your affiliation with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! And Country Crock. How did the union come about?

Joy Bauer: I joined forces with them to try and help clear up all the confusion around fat.  Meaning good fat verses bad fat. Margarine verses buttery spreads. I was really happy to do that because obviously I’m a fan of the product. And also what’s really cool; what you need to know is that they reformulated all of their buttery spreads.  It’s a clean wholesome plant based oil. There’s no partially hydrogenated oils. There’s no trans-fat. The other nice part is that its sixty calories per tablespoon verses one-hundred calories per butter. Coming from the camp of everybody trying to snip calories and trim things down but still maintain great flavor and a clean texture of butter it’s sort of like a no brainer.

Renisha Marie: You launched your own food line, Nourish Snacks, which delivers nutritious snacks to your client’s home or office. What was your motivation behind NourishSnacks.com?

Joy Bauer: Well, first we actually are rolling out in retail now. We sell them online but we also launched in Starbucks. We’re rolling out fast and furiously.  The reason I picked snacks is that it tends to be the thing that everybody is tripped up on and I always wanted to come up with a line that covered any craving any mood; sweet, salty, chewy or crunchy. It was sort of a one stop shopping. You don’t even have to even flip over the label because everything was done for you.  Their purposely portioned control. Their under two-hundred calories. Their gluten free. Their dairy free. Their wholesome. Their energizing. They don’t have any artificial ingredients at all.  I’ve been working on it for about three years.

Renisha Marie: I love it. It’s snaking with no worries. Awesome.

Joy Bauer:  Exactly. I’m going to have to borrow that tag line.

Renisha Marie: Go right on ahead (laughter commences). You are New York Times Bestselling author of Your Inner Skinny; please tell us what inspired you to write such an amazing book?

Joy Bauer:  Awe thank you.

Renisha Marie: You’re welcome.

Joy Bauer:  I think that everybody should really feel comfortable in their own skin. Truly, anybody can lose weight and better their health and increase their energy. It’s just really a matter of having a manageable and realistic script with a lot of versatility so that you can make it your own.

Renisha Marie: School is officially in session and life is hectic for a lot of parents out there.  Please provide parents with tips on how to keep their children eating right amidst frantic school schedules.

Joy Bauer:  That’s the million dollar question.  I think most importantly monkey see monkey do.  You have to be a healthy role model.  What I always tell parents is control what you can control and lay off what you can’t control. You don’t want to turn into a food Nazi. You don’t want to make your kids crazy and you don’t want them to rebel. So what can you control? Well, you can certainly bring smart foods into the house. There’s no reason to have soda. You can certainly get any of the flavored non-chloric seltzers.  Instead of whole fat cheese buy reduced fat cheese. You can easily make lean turkey tacos and turkey burgers and things like that. Also, limit the snacks that you have in the house because the more variety you have the more kids tend to eat.

There’s a lot of easy things you can do as a parent to get your kids eating well without a lot of stress.  Go out of your way to make dinner as often as possible verses popping something in the microwave or driving through a fast food chain. One of the easiest things you can do is to have five go to meals on automatic pilot that you can whip up in less than fifteen minutes. It doesn’t have to be gourmet. It can be a spinach turkey burger on whole grain bread with crunchy baby carrots or like a whole grain hamburger bun. It could be an open faced grilled cheese with sliced tomato and a cup of vegetable soup.  Just make your list and put them down on paper.  That can be incredibly helpful. I think a lot of the reasons why we turn to these convenience foods that are not so healthy is because we’re over scheduled and their engrained in our memory; verses just reprograming ourselves a little bit so that we make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Renisha Marie: How do you manage a busy career, make time for your family, as well as incorporate health and fitness into your life?

Joy Bauer:  It’s priority. For me, it’s always right in the front of my mind. I plan when I’m going to exercise and work out. I plan what I’m going to be making for dinner the following week. In all honesty, it doesn’t always work out perfectly. But I think when you give yourself a roadmap your fifty percent ahead of the game. As parents we have to be forgiving. You have to forgive yourself. Fifty to seventy percent of the time give yourself a pat on the back.

Renisha Marie: What are some things we can do to help reduce or daily calorie intake?

Joy Bauer:  The first thing I would say is to start with a high protein breakfast. If you eat protein in the morning it helps to energize you. It helps to wake up your brain cells but it also helps to control your appetite during the am hours so you’re less apt to over eat at lunch or grab a lot of snacks in the morning. It could be a Greek yogurt with a banana. Maybe one whole egg scrambled with two egg whites. You can add in spinach or chopped tomatoes. That’s actually a great tip. If you add in a teaspoon of the soft buttery spread it makes the eggs fluffier. I love that actually, and then I have it with a toasted whole grain English muffin.

Those are just some ideas that will increase your protein so that it helps to control your appetite. I think also when it comes to lunch when you’re getting sandwiches, instead of having a big fluffy roll you can go to an opened face sandwich on one slice of bread. If you have to have a roll, gently scoop out the inside dough and discard it. You still have the feeling of eating an oversized sandwich but you save yourself a lot of unnecessary starch. Another good tip is to drink two glasses of water before each meal. It helps to fill you up a little bit so you wind up eating less as a meal. Lastly, start your dinner with a non-starchy vegetable first course. That can be a salad with some light salad dressing or it can be a handful of cherry tomatoes. The reason is because between the water, fiber and the vegetables it starts to expand in your stomach. It takes the edge off your hunger so you’re less likely to overeat at dinner.

Renisha Marie: Tailgating is officially in season.  What are some healthy alternatives for pre-game snacks?

Joy Bauer:  Fun dips like salsa, humus, and guacamole always works. Carrots, celery, broccoli and cauliflower florets. Instead of hot dogs I would do lean turkey sausages. Instead of fatty steaks or ribs I would marinate chicken breast on the grill and you can have that as a sandwich. Turkey burgers are wonderful. Also, instead of greasy bags of chips you can bring lots and lots of fruit but also bags of popcorn. Of course Nourish Snacks works perfectly.

Renisha Marie: Please tell your fans something fun or funny about yourself that many people may not know.

Joy Bauer:  I’m addicted to criminal shows. Law and Order, Criminal Minds and Cold Case. I use to be in a rock band in high school and in college I played the key board.

Renisha Marie: That is so fabulous! Who would have known? I love it.

Joy Bauer: That’s actually a fun question.

What I always tell parents is control what you can control and lay off what you can’t control. Click To Tweet

Kristy Johnson is an amazing actress. I was introduced to Kristy via Monique, a character she plays in the Pasadena Playhouse production of Bernard Weinraub’s Above the Fold, directed by Steven Robman. I became mesmerized with Kristy’s performance and had to find out more about the woman behind the character.

Kristy Johnson has a mind-blowing talent along with the ability to take you on an emotional roller coaster filled with love, anger, compassion and laughter; she accurately embodies her character.

She is known for her performances in Battle of the year (2013), The Opposite of Life (2008) and Behind Closed Eyes (2008).

She was nominated for a 2010 Joseph Jefferson Award (Non-Equity) for a Supporting Role in a Play for “A Song for Coretta.”

Renisha Marie: Who is Kristy Johnson?

Kristy Johnson: An actor from the South Side of Chicago living in Los Angeles.

Renisha Marie: You have a law degree, as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree. At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a full time career in entertainment?

Kristy Johnson: I decided I wanted to pursue a career in entertainment shortly after I began practicing corporate law.

Renisha Marie: I caught your performance in the play Above the Fold at the Pasadena Play House and your act was enthralling. You embodied your character Monique leaving me feeling angry with, as well as sorry for, Monique. You captured the essence of your character. What groundwork, if any, did you have to do in order to nail the character?

Kristy Johnson: Thank you! Monique suffers from a multitude of issues, including mental illness, abuse and drug addiction, so I did a great deal of research. I also did lots of imaginative work to create a compelling backstory for Monique. This helped me to justify the choices she makes in the play.

Renisha Marie: In Above the Fold, you work with Academy Award and Emmy nominee Taraji P. Henson, and an impressive cast, including Arye Gross, ristopher Higgins, Mark Hildreth, Joe Massingill, and Seamus Mulcahy. Briefly describe what it’s like working with such an artistic cast of actors and actresses.

Kristy Johnson: I had a wonderful experience with everyone in this cast. It was a fun, creative and dedicated group of artists. Everyone was thrilled to be working on an exciting new play.

Renisha Marie: What do you love about your work?

Kristy Johnson: I love stepping into the lives of different characters and bringing their unique stories to life. It’s a new adventure every time. I also love that I learn so much from every character I play. Every job is an opportunity for me to grow artistically as well as personally.

Renisha Marie: Describe your dream role.

Kristy Johnson: I’d love to play a complicated character in a physically challenging role. I’d love to play a dancer or be in an action thriller with incredible fight sequences.

Renisha Marie: What has been your biggest challenge?

Kristy Johnson: Calming my nerves before auditions!

Renisha Marie: What motivates you?

Kristy Johnson: Living a life of purpose.

Renisha Marie: What is your best quality as an actress?

Kristy Johnson: I strive to be compassionate. My job is always to tell the truth of the characters I play. This requires love and understanding, which I think begins with compassion.

Renisha Marie: What advice do you have for aspiring actors and actresses?

Kristy Johnson: Get a spiritual practice. Do theater. Get training. Learn about yourself and be keenly observant of others.

Interview with Erika Christensen (Video)

Renisha Marie Entertainment LLC.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Erika Christensen who starred as Julia Braverman-Graham on the NBC family drama series Parenthood. This fall she will be joining forces with ABC for her new television show, Wicked City. Follow me, as we journey through the world of Erika Christensen.

Renisha Marie: Let’s begin by discussing your affiliation with Lean Cuisine. How did the union come about?

Erika Christensen:  I’m pretty vocal about my healthy lifestyle choices.  They came to me and told me what they were doing with the brand and I’m pretty much in alignment with everything they learn from their focus groups.  I do try to eat organic, high protein and gluten free. I really admire what they’re doing and I thought they were approaching it in a realistic way.  The way they were overhauling the brand was the same way that an individual might approach overhauling their diet and taking it one step at a time.

I’ve been giving Lean Cuisine my own feedback as well and then I get to talk to everybody like you about how much I love to exercise.  It all comes under the same heading. It’s fun for me.

Renisha Marie: You will be joining forces this fall with ABC for your new TV show, Wicked City, which is set to air on October  27th at 10:00 pm.  How did the connection transpire?

Slide18

Erika Christensen:  With Wicked City, I was actually originally thinking about another role. I came in to meet with the producers and do some scenes with them and they said, “what do you think about playing Betty?” I hadn’t thought about playing Betty, at all. In fact, my first reaction was, who is Betty? Because he had a different name in the original script.  But then I found her really interesting and we read some Betty scenes and they gave me the role. I was the first person on board for the pilot.

There are so many elements of this that I really like.  First of all, Betty is 180 degrees from Julia Braverman-Graham. She’s not confident.  She’s a damaged soul. She hasn’t had a happy and healthy family upbringing. She’s really not very confident and has any luck with men.  All of these things kind of put her right in the position of falling really hard for Kent who is a serial killer.  She seems to be pretty in; hook line and sink her.  She’s going to go down the rabbit hole with him.  She has a lot to learn about herself in these eleven episodes and so do we. I’m really curious to see how quickly she changes from when we first meet her as this soft spoken Nurse and single mom to wherever she ends up.

Renisha Marie: I viewed the trailer for Wicked City, which is packed with suspense, romance, action and full of drama. This is going to be one of the hottest shows this fall. Entertainment that will keep viewers hanging on the edge of their seats craving for more. What measures, if any, did you take to prepare for your role as Betty Beaumont?

Erika Christensen: I did some research into women that have been involved romantically with convicted murders.  It’s a very dark little pool to dip into; that kind of decided that this is something we want to focus on, making it really interestingly relatable.

It started out really as kind of a what if, for me.  What if you fell in love with someone who is really dangerous?

Renisha Marie: How do you manage a busy career, make time for your family, as well as incorporate health and fitness into your life?

Erika Christensen: Honestly, it’s just keeping those things in focus as the priorities.  I really, really love my job. There are definitely times where family and fitness kind of are pushed to the side.  But it’s only for specific stents.  My home life is very much about getting up in the morning and getting to the gym or getting on my bicycle and making sure that I get to cook dinner for my boyfriend. Hang out with my family, hopefully once a week. Thankfully also, let’s be honest.  Technology is hugely helpful.  FaceTime is a life saver for relationships and for family. That is definitely part of it. And just sharing. I have pictures from work that I’m sending to my family. I send them scripts that I’m working on so they can be excited and know what’s up with me.

Slide12

Renisha Marie: Please tell your fans something fun or funny about yourself that many people may not know.

Erika Christensen: Oh God. Fun or Funny? Okay let’s see. Let’s see. Hopefully it’s fun to know that I cook a lot. If you came over to my house I would want to cook for you. I’m always experimenting. I’m not much of a recipe follower. I make granola and I’m like, try this granola, it’s got truffle sauce on it. I brought a new seed from the health food store, like, what is this?

(Laughter commences)

Renisha Marie: Now that’s fun. I would love to try your granola. Yummy! What advice if any, do you have for those looking to take on a career in the entertainment industry?

Erika Christensen: I would say start wherever you can. No matter where you live, there’s a local community that is involved with theatre or even young people in school plays.  Definitely just get involved. The key to being something is doing that thing. Being an actor is definitely not about sitting around on set and having a cigarette or something. It’s about acting. The more you can audition, then that’s the best thing ever because you learn so much and you get your face out there and you grow your confidence.  I would say when you get to a point that you really feel like I can do this then your good. And honestly, if you want more specifics. Here’s a really specific piece of advice that I give a lot of people.  Call the Screen Actors Guild and ask them for a list of legitimate agents. They have a list and will give it to you for free.

Renisha Marie: Wonderful, thank you so much.  You have been so awesome. This concludes our interview. It’s been a pleasure speaking with you. I wish you continued success.

The key to being something is doing that thing.—Actress, Erika Christensen Click To Tweet

Interview with Vanessa Lachey (Video)

Renisha Marie Entertainment LLC.

Renisha Marie Entertainment LLC.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Vanessa Lachey; actress, entrepreneur, wife and mother of two. This summer, she teamed up Popsicle to promote their very first custom comic book, making Popsicle the super hero of the summer.

Today, Vanessa Lachey has taken time out of her busy schedule to provide us with a glimpse of her world. Follow me as we take a quick peek into the life of Vanessa Lachey.

Renisha Marie: Let’s begin by discussing your partnership with Popsicle. How did the collaboration come about?

Vanessa Lachey: It was one of those truly organic moments, just because Popsicle is an ultimate summer treat. It’s an ultimate kid’s treat. It’s something that I shared with my family growing up and that I can share with my son growing up. I love their brand and their messaging.

Basically, it takes time out of your busy day to spend time with your family.  In order to go into the kitchen, grab a Popsicle out the freezer, open it, sit with your son, hang out, talk about whatever’s going on….I love that.

Popsicle has taken it a step further and created a comic book.  It’s actually out in comic book stores. It’s the first Popsicle comic book. It’s something that I tangibly hold and read with my son.  He can point to the pictures. It’s great. Family first.

Renisha Marie: Regarding your Popsicle, ultimate hero of the summer partnership; you stated on your website, VanessaLachey.com, “As a working mom with two young kids, I am constantly on-the-go. Multitasking took on a whole new meaning when I became a mom of two…sometimes I feel like I NEED A SUPERPOWER to get it all done!” With that being said, let’s imagine there are no limits for you regarding a superpower of your choosing, when it comes to completing your tasks, including memorizing scripts, event appearances, exercising, managing your online lifestyle community, being a wife and mother of two. What superpower would you choose and why?

Vanessa Lachey: You know, someone recently asked me this, it’s the only reason that I can quickly answer it because I thought about it.  It would be time.  I would love to be able to time travel.  More importantly, go back to those moments I want to relive. To fast forward to the crazy ones, to slow down the beautiful ones. I think just to be able to have control of time would be amazing. Now you’re going to get me all emotional. It goes too quickly.  My sons going to be three, my daughters going to be seven months. Where does the time go? I’m going to be thirty-five in November. What is happening? And so, instead of thinking about the future, I just like to sit here and go back in time and enjoy this time or slow down this time.

Renisha Marie: You will be joining forces this fall with NBC for your new TV show, People Are Talking, how did the connection transpire?

Vanessa Lachey: It is now changed and this just happened, to Truth Be Told, that’s the new title.  It was pilot season.  I had Brooklyn in January and then I got some scripts, went out and I auditioned.  I hit the pavement with my mommy shoes just like every other girl. I auditioned, I actually auditioned for a pilot, got it, it didn’t get picked up. This show, Truth Be Told got picked up and they had to recast the lead girl.  I was fortunate enough to go in for that recasting session and I booked the job. We’re actually doing pre-production now.  We start filming August 10th.  It premieres October 16th on Friday at 8:30 pm on NBC. I’m very excited.

Renisha Marie: Awesome! I’m so excited for you. Please tell your fans something fun or funny about yourself that many people may not know.

Vanessa Lachey: Fun or funny? Well, they may know, I don’t know. I have a really, really awkward Fire Marshall Bill impression.

Renisha Marie: Ah, I love it. Let’s hear it (laughter commences).

Vanessa Lachey: It’s more of a visual thing you know. (Vanessa does her Fire Marshall Bill impression) “Let me tell you something!”  You know, I love to laugh and to try to put everything in perspective and know that nothing is too crazy and nothing is that serious.

Renisha Marie: What advice if any do you have for aspiring actors/actresses?

Vanessa Lachey: Never give up. I know that sounds so cliché but there’s a reason that it’s a cliché.  If you give up then you’ll probably regret it or you’ll never know.  At least just constantly try your hardest. Don’t give up until you come to a place where your content with knowing you’ve done everything you could. I think the people that have made it in this industry, yes there are a few lucky breaks; I don’t even know about that because people think oh, you got a lucky break, you got this movie.  If you look back at that person’s history, they have been working at it. They went to classes.  They went to auditions. They moved themselves to LA for whatever the reasons. I just say don’t give up.

Renisha Marie: This concludes our interview.  I wish you continued success. It’s been a pleasure speaking with you.

Renisha Marie: What inspired your new album Legendary?

TQ: My life. I always write about the things I go through. I think it’s the best way to connect. We all go through a lot of the same things in different ways. When I sing about those things, it creates a reaction in people; when they can relate to your substance you get fans for life… That’s Legendary, doesn’t happen much these days.

Renisha Marie: How would you describe your music?

TQ: Reality R&B.

Renisha Marie: When did you know music was what you wanted to do?

TQ: When all my friends got big and I stayed the same size. No more football (Laughter).

Renisha Marie: What inspired your hot single Bad Man?

TQ: Thanx! I watched Shaft, Superfly, and a couple other Blaxploitation films and I wanted to take it there. I’m a big Curtis Mayfield fan and I wanted to do something that was over the top cool like him. Fresh gave me the perfect beat for it.

Renisha Marie: What was your biggest opportunity in your music career?

TQ: Gaining back my catalog one-hundred percent. I wrote a lot of songs for a lot of people. I own it all now.

Renisha Marie: What has been your biggest challenge?

TQ: Doing my music my way. I wanted to be as uncategorized as I could. People think in genres so whenever I’ve gone against the grain of R&B and Hip Hop it’s hard for people to accept. Work in progress.

Renisha Marie: What makes your music stand out from other artist?

TQ: I don’t think people really care about substance in music anymore. I think my music means a whole different thing to my fans than other artists to their fans. I want my music to be thought provoking… Still.

Renisha Marie: Tell the world what to expect from TQ in the near future.

TQ: My video for “BAD MAN.” You guys are gonna love it. We really took it there. Diamond smuggling, Feds on the tale, high speed car chases, set in the 70’s along with the costumes to match the period. It’s very creative. Looks more like a movie than a video…Catch me live all over the place real soon too… Full band baby.

Renisha Marie: What advice do you have for up and coming artist?

TQ: Mind your paperwork.

If you’re bad and you know it, then get out there and purchase Legendary available on iTunes now!  https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/legendary/id594861174
