After One Direction split up in January 2016, Harry Styles has been hinting at the release of his first solo album for awhile. Last week, Styles announced through Instagram that his album will be released on May 12th, 2017. Last Saturday night, Harry Styles appeared on Saturday Night Live as a musical guest alongside guest host Jimmy Fallon for an episode of laughs and fun, and he performed his new song as a solo artist for the first time on stage since the band split up.
He sang two songs on the show, “Sign of the Times” and “Ever Since New York.” Because of his exit from the band, his music now is very different than the songs he used to sing. In a Rolling Stone interview, he talked about the meaning behind the song “Sign of the Times,”
“Most of the stuff that hurts me about what’s going on at the moment is not politics, it’s fundamentals … Equal rights. For everyone, all races, sexes, everything. ’Sign of the Times’ came from ‘This isn’t the first time we’ve been in a hard time, and it’s not going to be the last time.’ The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there’s a complication. The mother is told, ‘The child is fine, but you’re not going to make it.’ The mother has five minutes to tell the child, ‘Go forth and conquer.’”
Obviously, this style of music is very different from songs like “What Makes You Beautiful” or “Live While We’re Young.”
Other than his solo musical debut, it was his first time acting on screen as well. He dressed up and acted as Mick Jagger during SNL’s “Celebrity Family Feud: Time Travel Edition” segment and it was a very spot on imitation. He also acted as a civil war soldier and sang a bit during their civil war segment.
We’re so excited to hear the rest of the album and see the change of his music style after his exit from One Direction.
