Keiynan Lonsdale’s One Month Post-Coming Out Journey

When you’re someone in the LGBTQ community, it’s terrifying to come out to close friends and family members, but for a television star, your relationships with others are not the only things at stake as you come out to the world. Only a month ago, on May 12th, The Flash actor Keiynan Lonsdale came out on Instagram, after becoming “bored of being insecure, ashamed, scared,” revealing that he is bisexual in a heartfelt post saying, “I like girls, & I like guys (yes)” Let’s take a look at how his decision has impacted his life so far.

Only days after coming out, Google search of “Keiynan Lonsdale” became filled with news articles about his coming out Instagram post. The post was covered by news organizations including E! News,, Entertainment Tonight, and even Daily Mail. On May 22nd, 10 days after coming out, Lonsdale was interviewed by BUILD Series’ Matt Forte about the CW series, The Flash, and Lonsdale was asked how he felt during the moments leading up to coming out. He said,

“Honestly at the time, I did it all based off of feeling and I really wasn’t even thinking that much, which was kinda nice, because it is something that I’ve been thinking about for as long as I can remember, so it was sort of…I don’t know…it was actually really relaxing (laughs) which is something I never thought I’d be able to say about the topic, but yeah! It felt good. It was very freeing.”

On June 2nd, he was featured on Vulkan Magazine and he was interviewed about his character on The Flash, then he was interviewed by Fuse on June 5th.

Since he came out, his acting career has been on the rise along with his popularity.  On June 12th, 2017, news updates Twitter account for the book-to-film adaptation of Becky Albertalli’s Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, @simonvsfilm announced Keiynan Lonsdale will be playing the character Bram Greenfeld, a friend and classmate of Simon, he will star in the film alongside Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner, Colton Haynes and other stars.

Lonsdale is on hiatus from filming The Flash, but he has been busy focusing on his other love besides acting, which is singing. He performed live at the Roxy on May 19th with musical artist Louis Futon. On June 5th, he spoke to Fuse and said that he had been writing and recording music.

“Hopefully there will be a summer release, but we haven’t set a date yet.”

He continued,

“I tried to set a date before and then we sort of have to come together and figure out like no we needed to make sure everything was creatively right, so I’m not setting a date until we know for sure.“

With everything looking up for him, he is looking at a busy year ahead. He wrote another instagram post for pride on June 12th, exactly a month after he came out, describing how his life has changed for the better,

“I can’t express enough how my life/perspective has exploded with colour since choosing to simply be myself. I apply it to all aspects of my life, not just sexuality, it’s bigger than that. When you’re free to be yourself, you make so much room in your fucking mind to be more creative, to love better, to feel better, to think more clearly.. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.. but also the hardest. I don’t take it lightly, I never will.”

The post already gained 27,439 likes within a day.

It’s been quite impressive to see how different aspects of Keiynan Lonsdale’s public life were enhanced simply because he was brave enough to be true to himself and show the world a part of himself he wasn’t even ready accept long ago. He has already accomplished so much with his life within a month. One could only imagine what he could do in a year.

The Flash season 4 premieres on October 10th, 2017. Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is set to be in movie theatres on March 16, 2018.
